Why is it important?

Mental health nurses are the largest front line group within mental health services, exploring their experience and views in relation to risk management around physical health needs provided insight into challenges and barriers they face in supporting and screening physical health needs in the SMI population in timely manner

Perspectives

Journal article emerged from interviews with mental health nurses exploring their experience and views in meeting physical care needs of the people suffering with mental illness. People with serious mental illness can expect to die approximately 20-25 years earlier than people without mental illness , mental health professionals have a significant role to play in addressing physical care health needs of patients under their care- systematic screening, and clarity around roles as well as lack of knowledge and training needs are barriers identified in the qualitative study. These findings are similar to other studies conducted in relation to meeting physical health needs of people with serious mental illness (SMI)
