What is it about?
Considering the lack of conceptual clarity and consensus in current literature, this concept analysis proposes a comprehensive definition for the concept of maternal autonomy in the context of breastfeeding. This concept analysis was undertaken after critically analyzing the empirical and theoretical-conceptual-philosophical literature from diverse disciplines.

Why is it important?
In this paper it is argued that a clearer conceptual understanding of maternal autonomy in the context of breastfeeding will facilitate development of a theoretical conceptual framework in nursing that will guide future research and facilitate maternal and child healthcare professionals to provide effective care to lactating mothers and young children.
