What is it about?
This study show how recent increases in yield potential in winter wheat in China has been achieved trough selection of a few physiological traits: harvest index, kernel number per square meter and aboveground biomass. Other traits related to photosynthetic properties, seem not to be related to recent breeding advances.

Why is it important?
Results also indirectly support the concept that under potential yield conditions, the spike contributed more than the flag leaf to kernel formation.
