What is it about?

Despite frailty is thought to predispose delirium, no systematic review focusing on the relationship between these two conditions has been conducted thus far. To fill this gap, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using relevant available databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar).

Why is it important?

Only 20 articles were eligible for the systematic review and 8 for meta-analysis. We found significant heterogeneity in the characteristics of the populations recruited and in the methods used to assess both frailty and delirium. Overall, the studies eligible for meta-analysis supported the existence of a significant association between frailty and subsequent delirium.

Perspectives

Taken together, the results of this article may solicit researchers to design more rigorous studies, standardizing several aspects of the methodology and reporting, in order to advance this highly promising direction in this field.
