What is it about?

Fibroscan is a new non-invasive machine to measure liver stiffness measurement, which reflects the severity of liver fibrosis. This new tool can assist surgeons to predict the risk of liver failure after liver resection surgery.

Why is it important?

Fibroscan is better than all blood markers or imaging tests to predict major complications after liver resection surgery. It will become a new standard pre-operative assessment before liver resection surgery.

Perspectives

There are extensive validation studies on the use of Fibroscan to assess the severity of liver fibrosis in patients with various liver diseases. This paper relates the information of liver fibrosis to surgical outcome, hence creating a new indication for this machine in clinical practice. Future management guidelines should consider including Fibroscan as a standard assessment before any liver resection surgery.
