What is it about?
Some essential oils demonstrate an important antifungal activity against Aspergillus strains. we have tested the in vitro susceptibility of A. fumigatus strains to antifungal drugs and carvacrol, thymol, eugenol, thymoquinone, and cinnamon. For the first time, the voriconazole treatment efficacy for avian aspergillosis in experimentally infected chickens and for carvacrol as prophylaxis and therapeutic were examined.

Why is it important?
Our findings show that the carvacrol, the phenolic major component of oregano, has a promising potential to be used as a prophylactic and therapeutic against A. fumigatus. Thus, we can overcome the widespread uses of azole prophylaxis in birds that are thought to be the major driver of azole resistance and poor prognosis of avian aspergillosis due to the delayed diagnosis and treatment failure. These findings create a possibility to develop an effective drug-free alternative strategy for control of avian aspergillosis.
