What is it about?

Islamism and Modernism in Iran discusses four fundamental elements: Islam, Islamism, modernity and modernism. It addresses the emergence of the Islamic movement (a framework of thought and action) as an alternative to the century-long movement of modernization in Iran. Utilizing political, economic, cultural and objective (or goal-based) factors, It offers comparisons between these four elements. For example, while Islam is oriented toward faith, freedom, ingenuity, reasoned obedience and salvation, Islamism is driven by ideology, expropriation, absolute obedience and homogenization. And, while modernity is based on responsibility, freedom, ingenuity, reason, and emancipation, modernism is founded on power, exploitation, utilitarian rationality and gain.
