What is it about?

Qatari female university students reported their use of language learning strategies by completing Oxoford's (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). Results of this cohort of Arab university students self-reported language learning strategy use are presented and discussed.

Why is it important?

Ever since "communicative competence" (CC) was popularised by Canale and Swain (1980) and subsequently elaborated on and modified by other researchers, "strategic competence" (the ability to use strategies to carry out communication) has been one of the core components of CC. A vibrant line of research has thus been investigating "strategic competence" among second language learners. This article contributes to the body of knowledge on strategic competence by reporting a study with an under-researched cohort of second language learners.

Perspectives

I think this study and the report should be of interest to those who are interested in the investigation of the use of language learning strategies among second and foreign language learners. The significance of the study is that it addresses a rare cohort of second language learners .
