What is it about?

The paper reports universal primers that amplify a nuclear intron a wide variety of decapod crustaceans.

Why is it important?

Publishing genetic studies based entirely on mitochondrial DNA is becoming difficult. A single intron can help to explore issues such as reproductive isolation and sex-biased dispersal.

Perspectives

The primers described here have been a simple but efficient way to explore genetic structure, gene flow, reproductive isolation and mitonuclear discordance. Using introns is often a cost-effective alternative to developing microsatellite markers.
