Why is it important?

Youth subcultures continue to be a salient aspects of youths' experiences; many young people are aware of subcultures, even if they don't know much about them. Being able to provide an understanding of how and why youth subcultures exist is important for improving our understanding, tolerance, and acceptance of difference.

Perspectives

I find that much information on youth subculture is from "delinquency" or "criminology" perspectives, which define youth subcultures as problems. I've reversed this by assuming that youth subcultures exist because some young people see mainstream/dominant as the problem. It is important to take a look at things from different perspectives.
