What is it about?

To determine the effect of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on sexual functioning, penile curvature, and plaque characteristics in men with early-stage PD.

Why is it important?

eyronie’s disease (PD) affects 3.2% to 8.9% of adult men in their fifth or sixth decades of age. The etiology and pathophysiology have not been completely understood yet, but one theory involves traumatic inflammatory changes to the septal fibers of the erect penis. Recently, increased expression of transforming growth factor-b1 in fibrotic plaques has also been proposed. It was hypothesized that the reduction or interruption of the inflammatory process in the early inflammatory phase could stop or even reverse the progression of the disease [4].

Perspectives

The 6 months of omega-3 supplementation provide sufficient time-course analysis of the benefit of omega-3 in PD. In an attempt to confirm the effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids on several aspects of PD, we performed a subjective and objective comprehensive analysis of different signs and symptoms associated with PD. Our results failed to convincingly demonstrate a beneficial effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation in PD.
