To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a long-acting analog of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (triptorelin) in men with nonparaphilic hypersexuality (NPH).

Why is it important?
Hypersexuality is one of the most embarrassing for both patients, and their families. It is also a difficult and challenging issue for nurses when working with older patients in nursing homes. Male nursing home residents are among the most difficult to manage, because of the added stress they place on staff. Hypersexuality is always a difficult and challenging issue for nurses to address with older patients. Existing literature suggests that 5% of nursing home residents with dementia exhibit inappropriate sexual behavior. In some subjects, hypersexuality may be associated with mood, impulse and compulsive disorder, and with biological factors such as brain injury involving septal nuclei and dementia.
Perspectives
This study analyzes severely hypersexual patients, brings additional evidence of a true effect because focus on this category of patients minimizes the impact of spontaneous improvement and the placebo effect. Another limitation was that, we did not address the nursing staff’s opinion about the results of treatment.
