What is it about?
Hyperthyroidism increase the risk of developing atrial fibrillation (AF). In this study we show that thirteen percent of patients with acute ischemic stroke an co-existing AF suffer from previuosly unknown and untreated hyperthyroidism.

Why is it important?
The study suggest that untreated hyperthyroidism may contribute to the risk of embolic stroke. Early recognition and treatment of hyperthyroidism may prevent some cases of stroke.
