Why is it important?

Improvement of the predonation interview should contribute to decrease of residual risk of HIV in the blood supply.

Perspectives

Our study showed that male‐male sexual behavior was the strongest predictor of HIV infection among male blood donors, whereas for women, their sexual partners' risk behaviors were the strongest predictors of HIV infection. The challenge for blood banking practice is to create the right environment so donors can answer honestly at screening but systematic and controlled studies to see how to best elicit accurate and honest answers need further research.
