What is it about?

It is a personal account of how I became interested in the evolution of development. I was an undergraduate, studying ecology and evolution, but fell in love with marine embryos one summer at the MBL at Woods Hole, MA. After that summer of 1983, I was determined to study how developmental processes influenced evolution and have been studying it since then. I have also spent every summer at a marine lab and currently live full-time at Friday Harbor Laboratories.

Why is it important?

It might give others insights into how I helped start the field of Evolution and Development.

Perspectives

I don't usually write articles about myself, but Rudy Raff challenged me to do this, and I respect and admire Rudy so much, I could not refuse.
