What is it about?

Bright light administered via the eyes in the morning decreased subjective sleepiness and improved mood in the sighted and in the blind participants.

Why is it important?

This is the first report to show that bright light exposures via the eyes influence not only the rhythms of body temperature and melatonin secretion, but also mood in the blind.

Perspectives

Intriguingly, it appears that among the blind, similar to the sighted persons, some eyes may bear the non-visual effects of light through the circadian clock on regulation of body temperature, melatonin synthesis and mood.
