What is it about?

To determine whether Thr(307)-Asn(680) and Ala(307)-Ser(680) polymorphisms of the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSH-R) gene are associated with male infertility, semen quality, and reproductive hormones.

Perspectives

Infertility affects 10–15% of couples. Men with impaired semen quality represent 40–50% of all infertile men. However, the cause of male infertility is still unknown in approximately 30% of cases. Genetic disorders are considered to account for 15–30% of male factor infertility. FSH plays a crucial role in both female and male reproduction [5]. In men, FSH regulates the function of testicular Sertoli cells, where spermatogenesis takes place.
