To report the results from an Iranian large population-based randomized study of screening using prostate-specific antigen (PSA) to detect prostate cancer.

Why is it important?
There were 679 000 new cases of prostate cancer worldwide in 2002, making this the fifth most common cancer in the world and the second most common in men (11.7% of new cancer cases overall, 19% in developed countries and 5.3% in developing countries).
