What is it about?
Longan is a non-climacteric fruit. Based on its respiration rate, polyethylene (PE) bags of different oxygen and carbon dioxide transmission rates were developed to provide a suitable modified atmosphere to the fruit that can extend the post-harvest life.

Why is it important?
Due to the pericarp browning and microbial decay, post-harvest life of longan is limited to 2-4 days at ambient temperature, which have restricted the transport of longan to long distance markets. We focused on the designing modified atmosphere packages that can help to retain the quality of the longan at retails to the consumers. Our MAP design extended the post-harvest life to 46 days with lower pericarp browning and decay and good quality attributes.
