What is it about?

Glanders is an infectious disease of horses that may also affect people. Recently there has been a re-emergence of Glanders and at the same time more horses are moving internationally. This review looks at the potential risk factors for the spread of Glanders through the international movement of horses.

Why is it important?

The re-emergence of Glanders in areas that have previously been cleared of the disease and the difficulties with the current testing methods need to be considered when moving horses through or from at risk regions.

Perspectives

Glanders is one of the oldest recorded diseases of horses and recent evidence suggests the organism can remain in a latent state within the host for a long time. Current testing methods have difficulty in identifying this latent state so that current movement protocols may not be sufficient to mitigate the risk of Glanders when moving horses through or from affected regions. The rapid increase in the numbers of horses moved internationally in the last 5-10 years potentially raises the risk for the spread of Glanders.
