What is it about?
The common variants of the boom-bust concept in the context of biological invasions are described, multiple mechanisms that could produce boom-bust dynamics in non-native species are reviewed, and various approaches that have been used or could be used to describe and test for boom-bust dynamics in field data are evaluated. This overview includes a systematic review of published papers on boom-bust dynamics, as well as analyses of simulated population data to test methods used to describe boom-bust dynamics.
