What is it about?

This article is a commentary in response to the National Screening Committee's recent recommendation that the frequency of screening for diabetic retinopathy be reduced to 2 years for people with 2 consecutive negative screening results.

Why is it important?

We call for caution due to a lack of evidence and highlight the need for more research. Furthermore, we identify the possibility that the NSC's recommendation may be revised in the near future.

Perspectives

We wrote this article in the hope that it might help guide future research and prevent changes being made to the screening programme that could hamper its further development.
