What is it about?

One of the primary complaints affecting the quality of life after radical prostatectomy (RP) is urinary incontinence, which is maximum immediately after RP, but decrease chronologically. However, the mechanism remained unclear. We assessed the chronological changes in urinary incontinence and urethral sphincter function before and after RP and compared the findings of pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after RP to evaluate any anatomical changes.

Why is it important?

This is the first report to elucidate that slight vertical repositioning of the membranous urethra after radical prostatectomy causes chronological changes in urinary incontinence. A long urethral residual stump reduces urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy.

Perspectives

We believe this report contributes to know the mechanisms of anatomical and functional changes after RP, and the methods to avoid urinary incontinence after radical prostatectomy.
