What is it about?

The main complaints after radical prostatectomy are urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. In addition, many patients complain of penile shortening. Several studies have shown penile shortening after radical prostatectomy; however, the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon has been unclear. In our study, chronological changes in penile length before and after radical prostatectomy were measured and and the underlying mechanisms were investigated for the same.

Why is it important?

Penile lengths were shortest at 10 days after radical prostatectomy, and gradually recovered thereafter. After 12 months, they were not statistically different from the preoperative one. This is the first report in the world showing that slight vertical repositioning of the membranous urethra after radical prostatectomy revealed by choronological MRI investigations causes chronological changes in penile length.

Perspectives

The information is useful for patients to know penile appearance changes after radical prostatectomy.
