What is it about?

Blood is an important bio-fluid, that is increasingly being adopted to study fish physiology and health. This study provides preliminary blood haematology and biochemistry data with reference to culture temperature and sex, important in aquaculture.

Why is it important?

Results from this study provide preliminary baseline data that could be important in designing future health assessment studies to improve farmed galaxiid health, breeding success, and overall survival in a changing environment.

Perspectives

The Giant Kokopu is an emerging aquaculture species in New Zealand and there is a huge literature gap with respect to health assessment. I and co-authors conducted this study to provide basic haematology and blood biochemistry data to facilitate future health assessments. My hope is that this research leads to initiation of future large scale studies among galaxiid to enhance their resilience against climate change.
