What is it about?

In this study, we show that developing career competencies can help to become more employability, that is: be able to find and/or retain employment. More specifically, it turns out that career competencies can initiate job crafting behaviors (i.e., people making changes to their jobs so that they fit better with their preferences and skills), and that these behaviors subsequently enhance employability. We also found that work-home enrichment can be enhanced by career competencies via job crafting.

Why is it important?

This study shows that becoming better at reflection, communication, and action career competencies can help people to become more employable via proactive behavior at work. It also shows that there can be a positive cross-over from work to family after developing these competencies and crafting one's job. Thus, the study uncovers an important mechanism through which young professionals can enhance their ability for find employment and have positive spillover from work to home.

Perspectives

I really like this study because it connects several of my main research topics, especially career competencies and employability. It is great to find empirical evidence that these are positively related, thereby showing that it is indeed important to develop career competencies in today's dynamic career landscape.
