What is it about?
Transport of nutrients from interfacial apoplast into plant cells is thought to depend heavily on the electrochemical proton gradient generated by the H+-ATPase located on the plant periarbuscular membrane (PAM). our results show that an AM-specific tomato H+-ATPase, SlHA8, is essential for AM symbiosis and mycorrhizal P and N uptake.

Why is it important?
Our results propose a pivotal role of the SlHA8 gene in energizing the periarbuscular membrane for both symbiotic P and N transport in tomato, and highlight the evolutionary conservation of the AM-specific H+-ATPase orthologs in maintaining AM symbiosis across different eudicot and monocot mycorrhizal plant species.
