What is it about?

For a complete evaluation of asthenopia, multiple measures, including subjective questionnaires, objective optical quality and assessment of inflammatory cytokines, were used in this study. • Different combinations of light-emitting diode lighting conditions, varying in illuminance and correlated colour temperature, can alter asthenopia during reading.

Why is it important?

LED illuminance and CCT do have a significant effect on asthenopia during reading. 500lx–4000K lighting resulted in the lowest level of asthenopia. Conversely, low illuminance at low CCT (300lx–2700K) and high illuminance at high CCT (1000 lx–6500 K) promoted more severe asthenopia.

Perspectives

These results indicate that optimally designed light-emitting diode lighting can contribute to reducing asthenopia and could assist in developing illumination guidelines for reading indoors.
