What is it about?
Fires help keep many grassland plants species from going extinct. One idea that that fires improve reproduction. We test this theory in a natural experiment with two species. Fires synchronized flowering and increased pollination in one species but not another.

Why is it important?
Prescribed fire is important for managing prairies but the affects of fire on plant reproduction and pollination are not well known. We demonstrated that fire synchronized flowering time, increasing availability of mates, and improved reproductive success in one of the two species we examined. Our results suggest that fire may be critical for maintaining reproduction of some but not all prairie species.
