What is it about?

Some shareholders care about the impact that the companies they've invested in have on society and the environment. We've shown how these shareholders can exert influence on company managers, who they can draw on to enhance their influence, how managers perceive their actions, and what kind of changes in company environmental and social performance shareholders can expect as a result of their efforts.

Why is it important?

There's a growing awareness of the damage that some companies cause to the environment and to broader society. This has led to a burgeoning movement of shareholder activism aimed at changing the approach that companies take to environmental and social issues. Much of this activism is ineffective, however, and so we carried out this research in order to find out what exactly shareholders can do to make a real difference to company performance in these crucial areas.

Perspectives

I hope that the article serves as a resource for shareholder activists world-wide who want to enhance their influence over the companies that they're invested in.
