What is it about?

Invasion ecology is a relatively young field of study, and researchers are still struggling to assess the real impact of invasive species.

Why is it important?

This paper is one of the first meta-analytical studies based on a global dataset aimed at comparing the effects of native and NIS (non-indigenous species) predators and herbivores on native populations, covering a broad range of terrestrial and aquatic environments. The relevance of this work is due to the fact that it shows that the consumers’ origin, native or NIS, is a significant factor associated with its impact on local communities and, therefore, of its chances of becoming problematic.

Perspectives

The manuscript was published in a top journal in the field of ecology, as the findings represent an exciting discovery and are of interest to invasion ecologists and ecologists in general.
