What is it about?

The article tries to explain how the Ukraine crisis (2014) came about. While the mainstream media in the West emphasizes the role of Russia's President Putin, this article tries to explain why also the West is to be blamed for this crisis. More in particular, the West failed to integrate Russia into the Euro-Atlantic security architecture after the Cold War. Worse, NATO (in contrast to the Warsaw Pact) remained into existence. It even expanded multiple times in the direction of Russia.

Why is it important?

The current crisis between Russia and the West is serious. Arms control (ABM, CFE, INF,...) is in shatters. A new arms race is in the offing. Large scale military exercises are organized on each side of the border. For resolving these issues, one needs to know how the crisis started.
