What is it about?

Globally, the banana is the most affordable, widely available crop, and more than 1000 banana varieties, which differ in their color, taste, and chemical composition, are produced and consumed. There is a demand for efficient and cheap antimicrobial compounds, and this plant could be considered as a valuable sourse of these components. This review discusses the antimicrobial activity of different banana plant parts and the prepared nanoparticles and their bioactive compounds, as well as their recent applications in the food sector.

Why is it important?

It is important because it discussed in detail the antimicrobial effect of the banana plant parts and their responsible compounds. In addition, all its current applications in food processing highlight the need of manufacturing more food products containing banana plant parts, rather than fruit, to meet the marketplace’s demands. Reducing emissions resulting from this plant waste could also be achieved by producing sustainable packaging and nono formulated materials using these plant parts.
