What is it about?

The paper presents a shunt active filter used to mitigate the harmonic distortion produced by Variable Speed Drive (VSD) systems. A VSD load is connected at a certain bus in a simulated 14-bus Cigre benchmark distribution network. A shunt active filter is used to mitigate the VSD harmonics. The shunt active filter is controlled by a hysteresis controller and is coupled to the network through an LCL link. Harmonic analyses are performed using the fast Fourier transform and according to the IEEE Standard 519-2014. Three cases are considered: (i) no active filter; (ii) installing an active filter coupled to the network through an L link; and (iii) installing an active filter coupled through an LCL link. Simulation studies are performed by using the MATLAB/Simulink software. The results have shown that the shunt active filter with the LCL coupler reduces the harmonic distortion compared to the coupling through the L only.

Why is it important?

Harmonic analyses of VSD are performed using the FFT and according to IEEE Standard 519-2014. Three study cases results are performed and presented using the MATLAB/Simulink software. These cases include the case of no active filter, the case of shunt active filter connected via an L coupler, and the case when the active filter is connected via the LCL coupler. The results have shown that when no active filter is connected the TDD values exceed the maximum limit (10%) stipulated in the IEEE Standard 519-2014. When the active filter is connected via the L coupler, a significant reduction in the TDD values have been achieved and become less than the maximum limits stated in the IEEE 519-2014. Most important, when the shunt active filter is connected via the LCL coupler, the results have shown more reduction in the THD and TDD values compared with the case with L coupler. The connection of the shunt active filter via the LCL coupler provides better mitigation of the current and voltage harmonics than the connection via the L coupler.

Perspectives

The paper proposes the usage of LCL coupler for the shunt active filter instead of the traditional L coupler. Harmonic analyses of VSD voltages and currents are performed according to IEEE Standard 519-2014 and by Fast Fourier Transform.
