What is it about?
We developed an optical fiber cable capable of measuring pressure with high sensitivity and high-spatial resolution. The cable relies on a transducing mechanism that converts the pressure into strain, which can be measured with a standard distributed strain sensing (DSS) technique. For example, by using a DSS interrogator with 1 με resolution, the cable can measure the pressure with a resolution and accuracy of approximately 5 Pa and 10 hPa, respectively. Its intrinsic maximum spatial resolution is 8.5 cm, but the cable can be used also with a DSS with coarse resolution.

Why is it important?
This is the first example of a cable for distributed pressure sensors with such high sensitivity and based on standard single-mode fibers. Furthermore, it is compatible with any DSS interrogator, either Rayleigh- or Brillouin-based ones.
