What is it about?

The paper analyzes and compares a complete set of performance metrics of two hybrid Production Planning and Control systems, i.e. CONWIP and Workload Control, against the baseline of a classic push system. The results lead to important conclusions and suggest interesting improvements of simulation models and future directions of research for better understanding Production Planning and Control systems.

Why is it important?

Production Planning and Control systems have often been studied (i) by comparing only small sets of KPIs, and (ii) by means of aged and simple simulation models, That were developed theoretically and have little in common with real production environments. In this paper, we compared two simple and easy to implement production planning and control systems by means of a complete set of performance indicators. Also, we suggested how to develop new and more realistic simulation models.
