What is it about?
Bangla (Bengali) is an Indian script. Characters are joined with each other in writing. Segmentation (dividing) of a Bangla word into basic units is the most difficult task. We proposed a new segmentation method which results in highly correct segmentation. This work includes not only basic characters but also compound characters of Bangla script (Two or more basic characters are combined to form a complex shape called compound character).

There are very few studies on compound character recognition. This work considers compound characters in cursive writing.
Perspectives
The paper describes the segmentation method in detail. In future, similar techniques can be tested for other Indian scripts.
