What is it about?

This work was presented at a workshop related to evaluation methods for data visualizations. To understand how users think, we looked at different techniques used in various fields that help uncover users' mental models and reasoning. We then propose a hypothetical method of continuous journaling way to see understanding changes over time.

Why is it important?

People use visualizations to communicate data often. Communication is multifaceted. Not only are messages sent by a visualization, but they also need to be received by a viewer. We list several ways to understand what a viewer receives from visualizations and suggest a technique we call "micro-entries."

Perspectives

This was one of my first academic publications with my name as first author. It was exhilarating to get invited to present this work and describe the research I had been compiling about how people think and communicate what they know. There's a sense of pride in this work :)
