What is it about?
The emergence of new phenomena of 'tourism in the metaverse' in the 21st century has challenged our paradigm of sustainable tourism traditionally tied to the terrestrial physical environments. This article introduces the term 'metaversal sustainability' and thus enriches the terminological lexicon in this field. It argues in favour of sustainable tourism development through responsible management of the impacts of tourism in all its environments, encompassing both the physical and the virtual world. This approach is also applicable to other emerging tourism phenomena, such as astronaut tourism in the universe, and extends the traditional principles of sustainable development beyond planet Earth.
