What is it about?

Social enterprises are hybrid organisations that combine business activities and a social goal. This paper examines how hybrid organisations function in a remote location. The south Pacific island of Fiji is used as an example.

Why is it important?

As one of the first studies of a small Pacific island country, we extend knowledge of this region and add to current understandings of social enterprise. In particular, our paper adds valuable new knowledge of the effects of geographic location, political instability and cultural and ethnic divisions on hybrid organisations.

Perspectives

One aim of our paper is to provoke readers to think beyond mainstream management practices. Organisations exist in diverse environments and each location influences how they operate. So managers, policy makers and researchers need to consider how applicable practices are when they are considering applying them in places with very different social, political and economic arrangements.
