What is it about?

Different kinds of hybrid organisations are explained. Then we examine three different kinds of hybrid organisations in the small south Pacific island nation of Fiji. We explain how each of these different kinds of hybrid organisations can improve the wellbeing of local people.

Why is it important?

Hybrid organisations are culturally appropriate for the Pacific region. They offer an alternative pathway to achieve a sustainable enterprise economy. Organisations operate differently in different enviornments, so we need to know more about each locality to understand how organisations can operate effectively. Research into the startup, operation, impact and effectiveness of different hybrid organisation models would help to improve wellbeing in this region. Policies to nurture the development of hybrid organisations are encouraged. External agencies such as international charities could support the development of hybrid organisations as a way to improve wellbeing in this region. Development agencies are advised to consider providing funding through a regional agency rather than engaging directly with national governments.

Perspectives

Our paper highlights the complex environment of a small island nation in a way that is not immediately evident for a visitor to the region.
