What is it about?

Priority areas that may inform a future research agenda are described, with a particular emphasis on personalised short break options that move away from traditional types of day and respite care provision.

Why is it important?

Short breaks from caring are increasingly recognised as important to support carer wellbeing and quality of life. However, what makes a short break work in any given caring situation might vary and requires exploration. This article considers evidence about improving outcomes for carers through short breaks and respite, setting out a research agenda based on what is known about what works and the gaps

Perspectives

Effective support to carers is vital to sustaining our health and social care systems. Short breaks comprise one important area of support. We need a better understanding of the role that personalised short breaks can play in improving carer outcomes, and it is our hope that this article and research agenda can contribute to that
