Trespassing the gates of research: identifying algorithmic mechanisms that can cause distortions and biases in academic social media

What is it about?

The use of recommender systems is increasing on academic social media, platforms that store and disseminate scientific publications among researchers. In this study we perfom a platform analysis (interface, code and patent) and explore the biases on these platforms caused or potentialized by the algorithms.
