What is it about?
The purpose of this paper is to help teachers and others working in culturally and linguistically classrooms and schools expand their understanding of the meanings behind their students’ ethnic names. A deeper understanding of students’ heritage culture naming practices will provide teachers a deeper understanding of their student's home culture, language, and the individual stories of their students. Such insight will better position teachers to be culturally responsive and more effective in building relationships with their students and meeting their academic and socio-emotional needs.
