What is it about?
Internal communication is required in family businesses for management and direction, and the fact that both family and non-family employees are involved adds complexity. Successfully navigating this complexity contributes to the effective direction, management, and leadership of family businesses. This paper synthesises the direction and findings from previous research on internal communication within family businesses and suggests directions for further research. Managerial implications are also discussed based on a review of the current research.

Why is it important?
Internal communication in family businesses is primarily researched through the lenses of internal communication between family generations, internal communication and its impact on family identity, and internal communication during times of crisis. Existing study is mostly concerned with the function of family in internal communication, with little attention paid to the roles of non-family members and family members outside of the organisation.
