This article builds on Madeleine Akrich's notion of a 'technological script' to tease out the various skills that patients needs to be actively engaged in their care by participating in online communities.

Why is it important?
The idea of active patientism is widely celebrated in policy circles, but rarely broken down into what that means, concretely, for the individuals who are supposed to be active. This article therefore adds to the existing body of scholarship on active patientism by showing the various expectations of patients and the skills required of them in online health communities.
