What is it about?

IL is a continuous part of life learning and is closely associated with technological development in the library profession. The authors undertook a survey of the level of IL skills competency among university library professionals in Karachi. Results indicate that while librarians tends to be skilled at searching information resources, there was a generally overall low level of IL competency in the workplace.

Why is it important?

There have been no previous published, non-discipline-specific, research studies on the IL skills competencies of academic librarians in Pakistan. Furthermore, the authors have suggested initiatives that are not applicable just to Pakistan but additionally to any country in which studies have shown that library staff lack confidence in their use of technology.

Perspectives

Frequently there is a keen desire among library professionals to improve their IT / IL skills, but they are unsure how to proceed. In this paper, we have suggested that there is a leadership role for both library management and national library bodies.
