What is it about?
Grounded on real-time data collection following a scandal with 207 harvest workers in the wine supply chain in the Southern Brazil, this study shows that the same workers served as temporary labour to multiple product supply chains including grapes, apples, and poultry. By following the flow of labour, we uncovered how migrant temporary labour is used to manage product seasonality, and the role of previously hidden actors such as labour providers and charity institutions. We also show that different product supply chains tend to mimic each other and share the same pool of temporary workers to ensure capacity flexibility at low cost, while exploiting labour.
