The case against zoning

What is it about?

There is nothing problematic about private zoning; it occurs whenever people make geographical decisions. If these are inefficient, entrepreneurs responsible lose money and have less command over resources. There are great difficulties with public zoning; when they err, there is no similar market feed-back mechanism. As to the internalization of externalities, the usual defense of governmental interference with real estate markets, these can be attained, better, under a system of private enterprise. We also probe into the relationship between zoning and health.
