What is it about?
The research explores how young Chinese digital businesses develop and innovate their business models to survive in fast moving and competitive markets. This addresses the lacuna highlighted in the literature regarding the lack of understanding of how business model innovation contributes to business success, and how new digital ventures develop competitive advantage. The findings add support for the contention that business model innovation can play an important role and is beneficial in the success of new digital ventures in highly competitive environments. The founders attributed their success to a willingness for continued business model innovation, an openness to new opportunities, developing customer relationships, and continuous iteration.

Why is it important?
Whilst business model innovation has been posited as essential for both new and existing digital businesses, as they commonly operate in competitive and fast-moving markets with limited entry barriers, literature has highlighted that the link between business model innovation and how it supports business success remains unclear. Additionally, there is a limited understanding of how new digital ventures develop competitive advantage to achieve and remain competitive. This paper addresses these boundaries of knowledge by identifying how young Chinese digital businesses develop and innovate their business models to survive in the fast moving and competitive market which they are in.
